The Union Fair Society in cooperation with Jane and Sarah McCloskey, is pleased to announce the introduction of a permanent exhibit at the 2025 Union Fair/ Maine’s Wild Blueberry Festival. This exhibit will  feature a life-size diorama of the kitchen scene from the acclaimed children’s book Blueberries for Sal © 1948 Robert McCloskey. This exhibit will be on display July 30th - August 3, 2025.

There will be readings of the book by Sarah “Sal” McCloskey on Children’s Day, August 3rd. We will be offering a raffle basket, with a hardcover copy of the book, Blueberries for Sal, a t-shirt, and other  wild blueberry-themed items. T-Shirts and books will be available for sale in our souvenir booth.

Robert McCloskey (1914-2013) grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and became interested in art, music and inventing mechanical devices at an early age.  He was the author and illustrator of just eight books during his lifetime but among them are unforgettable masterpieces such as Make Way for Ducklings, awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1941, Homer Price (1943), Blueberries for Sal, a Caldecott Honor book in 1949, Time of Wonder, which received a Caldecott Medal in 1958, One Morning in Maine, a Caldecott Honoree in 1953, and Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man (1963).  A quintessentially American artist, McCloskey was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.

Sit with Sal and listen to this enchanting children’s story that has warmed our hearts for 75 years!
